Another Union, Another Endorsement — Orange Gets WTU

This morning Patrick Mara got the Fraternal Order of Police, and now Vincent Orange gets the Washington Teachers' Union. The WTU endorsement adds another union to Orange's list of endorsees, which currently includes the Washington, D.C. Building & Construction Trades Council, AFSCME Council 20 and Metro D.C. AFL-CIO. The WTU may not have the best name out there -- especially amongst folks that believe in education reform -- but they still bring organizational strength and resources to a race that will likely come down to turnout.

The Examiner has more details.

  1. Orange with the WTU Endorsement puts pressure on Biddle track record in Education because those who are actually in the schools on the daily basis teaching don’t even support someone who is supposedly “for education”. Im anxious to see how that endorsement will stand up to Biddles “18 years of education experience”.

  2. Not a surprise here, last summer Orange was touting Rhee around the city; Orange is an opportunist who can flip-flop his ideas with the best of them. The WTU has little credibility and many of its members don’t even vote in Washington, DC. The WTU needs to start looking at the rest of the AFT chapters around the country and realize the way they do business is classic “we can’t let gains for children get in the way of our ability to collectively bargain.” In the eyes of many, this adds more credibility to the Biddle campaign as it does a few of the others.
